Overview

This project will produce and test an online version of the PROGROUP behavioural weight management programme for patients living with severe obesity.

Objectives

  • Test the practicality of delivering PROGROUP
  • Create the online PROGROUP option and see how many patients choose to use it
  • Find out what patients think of the programme and how much of it they attend
  • Find out what the healthcare professionals delivering the programme think about it.
This information will help us improve the online treatment for future use.

While developing PROGROUP, we found that in many UK areas, it is very difficult to offer face-to-face treatment, for various reasons. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, more treatment is now possible online. People can access care using smartphones or home computers – this technology could help overcome some of the challenges of face-to-face treatment for some patients.

However, we do not know how acceptable or helpful online treatment is for patients who live with severe obesity. Having an online version of PROGROUP is important to offer group-based care as an option to many more people. This study will help us understand how this treatment works for patients, and how to support weight management services to provide it.

Context of the issue

Access to specialist weight management services for people with severe obesity is a challenge. Waiting lists are long and have lengthened since the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, the number of patients being referred has increased as other treatment options have become available. As a result, many services are investigating how to evolve to support their patients.
A significant proportion of specialist weight management services have considered virtual delivery of behaviour change programmes where in-person delivery of care is less practical. However, evidence-based options are limited. PROGROUP is an evidence-based group behavioural change programme specifically designed for people living with severe obesity. Patient acceptability and service delivery of the in-person version have been assessed through a national feasibility trial. The flexibility of in-person and remote delivery could enable this to become the standard approach across the NHS, and one that can be further adapted to include pharmacotherapy as necessary.

How the project addresses the issue

This study designs and tests a new remote version of the PROGROUP facilitated group-based behavioural intervention for people with severe obesity. The overall aim is to establish a remote version of PROGROUP as a treatment option in a programme with nationwide reach.

Advancing person-centred care

The Community and Primary Care Research Centre (CPCRC) is intensively research-active and has a strong proven track record of health services research.
Our research is conducted through the involvement of practitioners and the public, who are instrumental in helping to develop focused research questions and in designing projects.
We use a range of research methods (both qualitative and quantitative), to solve pressing and often complex research problems. Our research is often directed towards those individuals who are the most excluded or disempowered, have mental health problems and have difficulty accessing services.
