This 20-credit module provides the opportunity to critically explore the field of public health and health promotion practice. Concepts such as demography, epidemiology, political drivers, ethical issues, wider determinants of health, health inequalities, and sustainability will be explored, and health promotion models and approaches will be critically analysed and applied to practice.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

- Provide critical synthesis of a contemporary public health issue, making reference to political drivers, demographic and epidemiological factors, and ethical principles
- Critically analyse the complex wider factors that determine health status, and critically explore the resulting health inequalities, including ethical issues.
- Demonstrate complex critical analysis of health promotion models and approaches, and apply these to working collaboratively with individuals, families, communities and populations in unpredictable situations.
Level 6
- Provide critical analysis of a contemporary public health issue, making reference to political drivers, demographic and epidemiological factors, and ethical principles.
- Analyse the wider factors that determine health status, and critically explore the resulting health inequalities, including environmental sustainability.
- Demonstrate critical analysis of health promotion models and approaches, and apply these to working collaboratively with individuals, families communities and populations.

In this module teaching and learning will take place online using set readings and activities that you complete independently in your own time on a week by week basis. Each week, there is an online interactive seminar on a Thursday of the dates above. The seminar is based on the weekly topic and aligns with the weekly readings and activities. There will be an offer of a face-to-face tutorial (which can be done online if that's preferred) at the end of the module, but otherwise the whole module is online.
Please be aware that all modules run to minimum numbers. In the event that there are low numbers, this module may be rescheduled to an alternative date. Some modules are also subject to maximum numbers.

To undertake this module as part of a professional development pathway you must be:
- A registered health and social care practitioner or health and social care worker.
- Ideally in possession of previous study at degree level.
Individuals without a degree may be eligible to apply providing they have appropriate practice-related experience relevant to the programme, please discuss with the Professional Development Unit prior to application.
